Blog of my book: Sky Woman Lives in Me

May 18, 2020

Hello to everyone reading this blog! The last time I blogged here was in February, 2020. Since my last blog many things have been happening in the world!  This country and many countries are experiencing a pandemic called Covid19.  I hope this finds all of you staying home, staying safe when you can. This too share pass, as the Spanish Flu Pandemic did in 1918.  Please pray for the Navajo and African Americans, who are suffering unnecessarily, from this terrible Covid 19 Virus.

Today I honor Barbara Smith who would have turned 102 years old today. Barbara helped me find out where my Great Grandmother, Sophia Huff, lived as a servant from the years of 1892 until 1902.  My book, Sky Woman Lives in Me, shares the attempted assimilation of my great grandmother and my Great Aunt, Lily Huff. The U.S. Government forced these two relatives of mine to attend the Carlisle Indian Industrial Boarding School to learn English, have new English names, become Euro-white and become christianized and lose their savageness! Lily only attended Carlisle three days and then was shipped out to work as a servant for Quakers. A year later, Sophia was sent to Barbara Smith’s Uncle, Abel Tomlinson, to work as a servant for ten years.  Below is a photo of Barbara and I,  taken in the late 90’s.  My God, Our Creator, bless her for her kindness and help when I was researching my book. She was a loving human being.  She treated everyone as equal, no matter what race, creed, color.  She will always be in my heart.  Thank you for reading this blog. Please share if you wish. Stay Safe!
